Seven Valleys students promote school at business showcase:
On April 8, 2017, OCM BOCES Seven Valleys New Tech Academy students spent their Saturday morning connecting with representatives from local businesses at the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce’s annual business showcase. The showcase is one of the Chamber’s signature events, attended by thousands of community members in a “trade show” format. The students made some great connections and used the opportunity to promote their school and its focus on Project Based Learning.

Students at the OCM BOCES McEvoy campus recently joined forces to create one of the most entertaining and engaging tools they could think of – a video game – to give players a virtual tour of the building and information about its Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs.

84 inducted to National Technical Honor Society:
Cortland — Congratulations to 84 Cortland-area students who were inducted April 6 into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) at Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES' McEvoy campus. Students that qualify for induction into the technical honor society represent the “best of the best” in Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs.
To be inducted into the technical honor society, students must have an 85 average or higher, 12 or fewer absences from their program for the year and receive a teacher endorsement. Students must also demonstrate attributes that include: respect, honesty, skill, responsibility, leadership, service and citizenship.

Seventeen CNY students participate in Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference:
Seventeen students from school districts across Central New York have returned to school on April 3 after spending the weekend in Albany as part of a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience. Through OCM BOCES’ Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Network (RBERN), the students came together to make up the Syracuse Delegation for the annual Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI).
The Syracuse Delegation is among 8 regional groups from across the state that have been training locally early this year, to identify and research political and community issues and study the state’s legislative process, parliamentary procedure and selected bills. Homer students explore dozens of careers:
What kind of career would you like to pursue? What kind of training and education do you need to pursue it? About 190 students from Homer Junior High School explored those questions last week during a Career Day celebration held at the OCM BOCES McEvoy campus in Cortland.
Thirty-nine professionals, including instructors from OCM BOCES, volunteered their time to share their expertise about possible careers. Students, in turn, donned their best job-interview attire as they traveled from classroom to classroom, listening to the speakers, taking notes and asking questions.

New HR director/school attorney apppointed:
The Onondaga-Cortland- Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (OCM BOCES) is pleased to announce the appointment of Syracuse attorney Joseph J. Bufano as its new director of Human Resources/School Attorney.
Bufano will begin his new position April 3. He previously represented OCM BOCES for eight years as an attorney for Ferrara Fiorenza PC, a law firm with offices in East Syracuse and Rochester that focuses on employment law.
Bufano said he was attracted to the new position because he had “several rewarding and successful experiences representing the BOCES” and especially enjoyed working with the OCM BOCES leadership team. OCM BOCES has nearly 1,100 employees.

McEvoy Culinary students create recipes for local eatery:
What can a high school senior do to leave their mark on their school and community? For some OCM BOCES Culinary Arts students, the concept of leaving a mark meant creating a signature recipe for a local eatery.
Dean Catlin, owner of Skyline Raceway in Blodgett Mills, recently made a “Pit stop” to the OCM BOCES McEvoy campus for the purpose of enlisting culinary arts students’ help in creating a signature culinary creation for the track’s restaurant.
Mr. Catlin, who often volunteers with students, recently approached OCM BOCES culinary arts instructor, Chef Lori Rossi, with his idea.

Kuwait educators visit OCM BOCES program:
Twenty-seven education dignitaries from Kuwait traveled this week to Lime Hollow Nature Center in Cortland to learn from high school seniors and staff about an on-site, hands-on program offered through the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Board of Cooperative Education Services (OCM BOCES).
One of the visitors to the OCM BOCES’ New Vision program serves as second-in-command in Kuwait’s Ministry of Education. Assistant Undersecretary Fatma Alkandari took copious notes during the presentation and later used one word to describe her impression: “Amazing.”

Students in the OCM BOCES two-year Media Marketing and Communications program at WCNY gain valuable real-world experience, working alongside WCNY media professionals, while earning their Regents High School diplomas and up to 18 college credits through classes taught by Onondaga Community College professors at WCNY!

For the second year in a row, four representatives from Cornell Dining traveled to OCM BOCES' McEvoy Campus in Cortland to take part in a continuing partnership with Chef Lori Rossi's Culinary Arts class. The result: a culinary masterpiece of fresh pasta and chicken parmesan, as well as fresh oven-roasted tomato sauce and cello basil leaves as a garnish.
Chef Timothy Oltz of Cornell Catering, Chef Steven Miller, Matthew Johnson, and Harry Ashendorf made the trip to work with the class of 18 high school seniors from Homer, Cortland, McGraw, DeRuyter and Cincinnatus.

"Chit Chat Train" project promotes positive interaction:
It was full-steam ahead for OCM BOCES students at our Crown Road campus, where teachers and staff in our Stellatta and K-8 special education programs recently piloted a social communication project, called the "Chit Chat Train," to encourage students to display positive and appropriate interactions with their peers.
For four weeks, students earned paper train cars for using appropriate nonverbal gestures and social greetings, as well as for asking/answering each other's questions and making appropriate comments during peer interactions.

Sarting today, January 27, employees at OCM BOCES will be challenged to ramp up their recycling efforts and use less energy through the new “Go Green Challenge.”
In a nutshell, the Go Green Challenge is meant to be a fun but ruthless competition to see which OCM BOCES building can demonstrate the largest improvement in energy reduction and recycling efforts by the end of the school year. Bonus points will be awarded for special sustainability projects. The goal is to make our work environment healthier and more sustainable for future generations.

In his 18 years of teaching, second-grade teacher Rick Mace (pictured) has seen a few educational trends come and go.
But an online literacy platform called myOn® has pushed his students into happily reading thousands of books in class and at home, and has increased their reading proficiency at the same time.
“It blew me away,” said Mace, who first started myOn® last fall at Cherry Road Elementary School in the Westhill Central School District. “I started to realize it was like having a gold mine.”

Corrective plan implemented in response to state audit:
The Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (OCM BOCES) has developed and is already implementing a corrective action plan to address the findings of a recent state Comptroller’s Office audit regarding the Central New York Regional Information Center (CNYRIC).
