Seven Valleys students promote school at business showcase: On April 8, 2017, OCM BOCES Seven Valleys New Tech Academy students spent their Saturday morning connecting with representatives from local businesses at the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce’s annual business showcase. The showcase is one of the Chamber’s signature events, attended by thousands of community members in a “trade show” format. Students that qualify for induction into the technical honor society represent the “best of the best” in Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs.   To be inducted into the technical honor society, students must have an 85 average or higher, 12 or fewer absences from their program for the year and receive a teacher endorsement. Seventeen CNY students participate in Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference: Seventeen students from school districts across Central New York have returned to school on April 3 after spending the weekend in Albany as part of a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience. Through OCM BOCES’ Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Network (RBERN), the students came together to make up the Syracuse Delegation for the annual Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI).   The Syracuse Delegation is among 8 regional groups from across the state that have been training locally early this year, to identify and research political and community issues and study the state’s legislative process, parliamentary procedure and selected bills. Homer students explore dozens of careers:      What kind of career would you like to pursue? What kind of training and education do you need to pursue it? About 190 students from Homer Junior High School explored those questions last week during a Career Day celebration held at the OCM BOCES McEvoy campus in Cortland.      Thirty-nine professionals, including instructors from OCM BOCES, volunteered their time to share their expertise about possible careers. New HR director/school attorney apppointed: The Onondaga-Cortland- Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (OCM BOCES) is pleased to announce the appointment of Syracuse attorney Joseph J. Bufano as its new director of Human Resources/School Attorney. Bufano will begin his new position April 3. He previously represented OCM BOCES for eight years as an attorney for Ferrara Fiorenza PC, a law firm with offices in East Syracuse and Rochester that focuses on employment law. Bufano said he was attracted to the new position because he had “several rewarding and successful experiences representing the BOCES” and especially enjoyed working with the OCM BOCES leadership team. McEvoy Culinary students create recipes for local eatery: What can a high school senior do to leave their mark on their school and community? For some OCM BOCES Culinary Arts students, the concept of leaving a mark meant creating a signature recipe for a local eatery. "Chit Chat Train" project promotes positive interaction: It was full-steam ahead for OCM BOCES students at our Crown Road campus, where teachers and staff in our Stellatta and K-8 special education programs recently piloted a social communication project, called the "Chit Chat Train," to encourage students to display positive and appropriate interactions with their peers. For four weeks, students earned paper train cars for using appropriate nonverbal gestures and social greetings, as well as for asking/answering each other's questions and making appropriate comments during peer interactions.
