Without a high school diploma, the 37-year-old Camillus resident felt like she just couldn’t get ahead.   That all changed in June 2023 when Gasparini enrolled in the no-cost National External Diploma Program (NEDP) through OCM BOCES. The NEDP allows adults to earn a high school diploma online at their own pace. “I wanted to make something of myself so that my kids can be proud of who their mother is,” she said. “I didn’t want them to follow in my footsteps as someone who did not graduate or did not have a diploma of any kind.” ...

The initiative will equip 10 students with essential skills and certifications required for a career with the union. The program spans six weeks, with students attending classes Monday through Thursday. Over the course of 140 hours, participants will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge crucial for their future roles in the industry. A record 250 community members participated in the 12-year-old event, which kicked off at 11:30 a.m. with 30 community resource tables assembled inside and outside the former Parker School on Madison Street.
