Students at Cortland Alternative School meet 'Frumpkin'
Jan. 27, 2025
Students at Cortland Alternative School recently got an up-close look at “Frumpkin,” a majestic ted-tailed hawk that perched and fluttered its wings on their leather-gloved forearms as part of a live demonstration by local falconer Quentin Bartholomew (top left photo) and master falconer Peter Harrity.
Students met this majestic bird of prey—one of the most common hawks in North America—during a visit to Lime Hollow Nature Center. They’ve been visiting the center this year as part of a “service learning project”—a learning approach that combines education with community service. Adult ed student pursues dream career
Tues., Dec. 10, 2024
Guided by her faith and passion for comforting others, an OCM BOCES Adult Education student is following her dreams through the Practical Nursing program.
“Everybody kept saying, 'You'd be a good nurse the way you care for people’,” Beatrice Campbell said. “I’m so grateful to be here at BOCES.”
The life-changing moment that influenced her career path came in 2011 when her brother nearly drowned in a swimming pool, leaving Beatrice and her family shaken.
That’s when she noticed how a touch of compassion can help carry a family through tough times.
“He’s the only son in the family,” she said. “By God’s ...

Briana Bryant remembers the surprise she felt when she opened her acceptance email from the OCM BOCES Adult Education Practical Nursing program and spotted the name of her longtime friend—Tykara Johnson—on the same recipient list.
It had been four long years since Tykara packed up her car in 2020 and moved to Augusta, Ga., leaving behind her hometown of Syracuse, her parents, and her friend, Briana.
“I messaged her right away,” Briana recalled. “Seeing her name confirmed that this was meant to be. We had graduated high school together and started our first jobs together. It just felt right.”

From No Diploma to Certified Dental Assistant — in 16 Months
August 20, 2024
Kala Gasparini decided she’d had enough working dead-end jobs to support her family. Without a high school diploma, the 37-year-old Camillus resident felt like she just couldn’t get ahead.
That all changed in June 2023 when Gasparini enrolled in the no-cost National External Diploma Program (NEDP) through OCM BOCES. The NEDP allows adults to earn a high school diploma online at their own pace.
“I wanted to make something of myself so that my kids can be proud of who their mother is,” she said. “I didn’t want them to follow in my footsteps as someone who did not graduate or did not have a diploma of any kind.”
