School Library System honors two educators with Administrator/Advocate of the Year awards:
The OCM BOCES School Library System will present its 2016 Administrator/Advocate of the Year awards on May 11 to two outstanding library advocates who have made a difference for school libraries in their districts and buildings. The event will be held at noon at the OCM BOCES new Main Campus in Liverpool.
This year, the OCM BOCES School Library System is proud to recognize Michael Falls , Director of Business and Finance for the Homer Central School District, as Administrator of the Year. Maria Natasi , an English Language Arts teacher at LaFayette Junior/Senior High School, will be honored as Advocate of the Year.

When representatives from Vera House visited STARS Alternative High School in Solvay last fall, their lessons about domestic violence inspired an enormous sense of resolve among the school’s 100 students.
“The students were truly affected by the presentation,” Principal Pat Mahunik said. "They knew that not acting was not an option. They wanted to do something to help.”

Special Olympic Games will take place at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on May 19:
More than 800 student athletes from OCM BOCES and various local school districts will be competing in the 2016 Special Olympic Games on May 19, 2016 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. A Parade of Athletes will kick off the day at approximately 10:30 a.m. with athletic competitions lasting until approximately 1:30 p.m. The rain date for the event is Thursday, May 26, 2016.
Athletes will compete in track and field events including the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m dashes, running long jump, standing broad jump, softball throw and shot put. There will also be adapted events, including walking with and without assistance, as well as wheelchair races.

Interim leader of the Central New York Regional Information Center begins new role:
The Centr al New York Regional Information Center (CNYRIC) is under new leadership following the retirement of former Chief Technology Officer Mike Fay. With nearly 40 years of experience in education, Peter Ciarelli has been appointed interim director of the organization. His first day was April 4th.
“Mr. Ciarelli is highly qualified and respected in the area,” said OCM BOCES District Superintendent Jody Manning. “He will serve us well as we search for a full-time director.”

More than 180 BOCES students inducted into National Technical Honor Society:
Best of the best: More than 180 students in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs from OCM BOCES in Syracuse and Cortland were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) during ceremonies in March at their respective schools.
Students who qualify must have an 85 average or higher, 12 or fewer absences from their program for the year and receive a teacher endorsement. Students must also demonstrate respect, honesty, skill, responsibility, leadership, service and citizenship. Hispanic and Latino students debate legislation during a mock Assembly in Albany:
Students in a program aimed at nurturing future Hispanic and Latino leaders took a recent trip to Albany to participate in a full mock Assembly that focused on actual legislation affecting their culture and communities.
Eighteen students in the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute made the culminating trip after attending five leadership training sessions, including a daylong training session at the Onondaga County Legislature. The program was hosted by the Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN) at OCM BOCES. Students also met with legislative leaders during their trip to Albany.

BOCES students win silver in Gallaudet University’s Academic Bowl:
Winning Silver: BOCES’ Deaf and Hard of Hearing program tied for for silver in the Gallaudet University’s Academic Bowl at the Fanwood School for the Deaf in White Plains. Students prepped for knowledge tests in history, science, math, English and current events. In a competition with 18 other schools, they ended up in a three-way tie, almost making it to the national competition. Congratulations to Nasir Clark, Dashae Reeves, Jacob Sikorski, and Vannessa Zurbruegg, pictured in the middle below. Coaches for the team were Lisa Phinney and Penny Killeen . Otto the Orange makes a special appearance at McEvoy:
Otto the Orange made a grand appearance recently at the McEvoy Education Campus of Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES, where nearly 100 students and staff greeted the Syracuse University mascot with hugs and high-fives.
Otto was invited to Cortland for a celebration of a building-wide initiative called Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, or PBIS. The initiative embraces the building’s four core values: generosity, belonging, independence and collaboration.
Principal CaroleAnn Davies said these core values are central to McEvoy.

On Wednesday March 16, 2016, Miss Brown's classroom at NPE had the privilege and honor to have a special author visitor, Bruce Coville join our classroom to talk about writing. Our students have been reading his book Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher during our daily read aloud time. Another student had been reading at the end of each day with the classroom Social Worker one of his many other books, Goblins in The Castle which has greatly sparked the student's interest in reading more. The classroom has also read his book, Monster's Ring in the past during a daily read a loud. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students help recreate their classroom environment:
Over the past few months, students in Mrs. Phinney's Deaf and Hard of Hearing classes at Solvay High School have been working on a Project Based Learning (PBL) experience to make reading and literacy more engaging in the classroom. The students have been working collaboratively with the company Yogibo, a New Age bean bag furniture company that sells lounge bags, bean bag chairs, body pillows, rugs, and more. On March 4, as a result of their hard work, they were invited to the Yogibo store at Destiny Mall to create their own classroom furniture.

Inspired by world-renowned chef, Innovation Tech students prepare cultural food:
After wor king with the producers of CNN’s hit television show, “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” students at Innovation Tech in Liverpool researched traditional foods in Spanish-speaking countries and created their own recipes to cook up, serve and eat.
Students offered bite-sized portions of their efforts during presentations March 10th that covered nearly table in the cafeteria of their high school off Crown Road. The students made omelettes, enchiladas, sandwiches, plantains, lemon crème, cake and empanadas.

Celebrating Reading:
Read Across America Day is Wednesday March 2 nd , but the Special Ed. Program at CTC is celebrating Dr. Seuss’s Birthday all week. Each day students and staff are dressing up to celebrate this occasion.
Monday: students were treated to a Green Eggs and Ham (and pancakes!) breakfast while they dressed in green.
Tuesday was stars and Stripes day. While wearing striped clothing, students and staff who were caught doing something kind were given a star to wear.
Wednesday everyone was able to come to school in Pajamas! Crazy socks were the theme for Thursday and Friday to honor the Cat in the Hat, everyone will be wearing a hat.

Students present “The Immigrant Experience” cultural celebration with Wegmans:
Eighth grade students in the OCM BOCES Reach Program have been working on a project entitled “The Immigrant Experience,” during which they spent time researching immigration along with a variety of cultural foods as they learned about different cultures in China, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Poland. Students used their knowledge to create visual displays and on Thursday, February 25, they had the opportunity to present information about the foods and cultures in the Taft Road Wegmans Cafe. While students presented their information, staff from Wegmans was on hand to provide free samples of the foods the students researched.

Cortland parents, students experience Innovation Tech:
About 65 parents and students from the Cortland area trekked through the cold on Feb. 10th to experience first-hand the unique educational character of Innovation Tech, an OCM BOCES high school in Liverpool that will soon be replicated in their region.
The new school, called Seven Valleys New Tech Academy, is set to open in September at 240 Port Watson St. in Cortland.
Like Innovation Tech, Seven Valleys New Tech Academy will shred most of the traditional concepts of a school day. Instead of working quietly and independently in neat rows of desks, students at Seven Valleys will work collaboratively on real-world projects, guide their own instruction and use technology as a matter of course. Expanding a zoo? Innovation Tech students present to BOCES Board:
If you need to expand a zoo, students at Innovation Tech have your answer. Three students from the cutting-edge OCM BOCES high school in Liverpool presented their project, called “At Home in my Biome,” during a recent meeting of the BOCES Board of Education. The students tackled a possible expansion project for The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango, which has boomed in popularity. The students conducted research, developed an interactive map and created a model habitat for their proposed new animal – a red panda -- using the Minecraft video game. At the Board meeting, students gave Board members a virtual tour of their proposed habitat, which included climbing branches, a nesting box and toys.

Student delegates announced for Hispanic/Latino leadership program:
A program aimed at empowering Hispanic/Latino high school students from across the state recently announced this year’s delegates from six Central New York school districts.
The program, called the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, is hosted by the Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN) at OCM BOCES. Students who qualify for the program engage in five leadership training sessions before attending a culminating event March 19-21 in Albany. At the three-day Albany conference, called the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, students participate in a mock Assembly session and debate legislation that affects their state and communities.

OCM BOCES is currently seeking nominations for its Career and Technical Education (CTE) Alumni Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors OCM BOCES CTE program graduates who demonstrate leadership in their field. Two individuals will be selected for recognition as 2016 Hall of Fame inductees: one graduate from the Irvin E. Henry Campus in Syracuse, NY and one graduate from the Charles E. McEvoy Education Center in Cortland, NY.
The 2016 inductees selected from each campus will be honored at individual award ceremonies held at their respective campuses in June. Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES will open Seven Valleys New Tech Academy in Cortland County in Fall 2016, the organization announced this week. The creation of the school was announced last July.
The school will serve area high school students in grades 9-12, and will provide an innovative learning environment that aims to improve students’ college and career readiness through project-based learning, collaborative workspace and technology.
